Similar artists and their representations

The Artic Monkeys Arctic Monkeys are an English rock band
formed in 2002 in High Green, a suburb of Sheffield. The Artic monkeys style is very suave and sleek, formally dressed. Which gives an impression of seriousness and coldness. Since rock revolves around around depression, sadness and cold feelings , it represents that.

The 1975 are an English rock band originating from Manchester. The name was inspired by scribblings found on the backpage of a poetry book by Jack Kerouac that stated "1 June, The 1975". The 1975 has a very old school rock look, which leather jackets, tatoos and a monochrome wardrobe; which is very laid back.

Many other artists/bands like foster the people, the killers, oasis the black keys etc have the same sort of style or representation. Each depends on their band name and how they want their band or artist to look. It depends if their music is deep and edgy, they would go for a cold and edgier look. If its more towards the pop side they would wear casual clothes.  It all depends on the artists and their music.

Final Concept

After much thinking my concept was starting to seem like the actual artists music video, so I thought of a completely different concept which is the following:
The main concept of my music video is about an old guy who dreams of his past , in which he regrets the things he had done because of that he regrets all the things he had done. In his past he was a rebel and someone who would go by his own rules. In the end he is left alone by everyone.

Music video concept:refined-(song:up all night-alex clare)

I originally envisioned a hangover-style/what happened last night video in tune to the song then i read an MTV interview with the artist Alex Clare that stated(thus forcing me to reevaluate):
'A couple of your songs sound like party anthems on the surface but have a darker conceptual edge behind them...'

AC:Yeah exactly. “Up All Night,” for sure. The video is about somnambulism. Or sleepwalkers basically. I’m not actually in the video, which is really weird. I’m in it for a second walking a dog at the end. I have a cameo in my own video! Yeah the concept is kind of dark. The whole premise is about these guys who sort of fall asleep and then wake up in random places because they throw themselves to the wind while sleepwalking.

So then this gave me a new idea :
The video starts with 2 different people, two men(artist+ someone else)who wake up from laying on the (artist:roof/backseat of the car/on  a treadmill  + guy 2: on a slide in a garden or a cold concrete roof.having passing out after the previous night). Throughout the video , one of the men is seen attempting cartwheels and dancing on the roof and the other is seen playing the drums/keyboards/instruments to the song. The video progresses to show how the 2 characters' actions whilst sleepwalking led them to the beginning of the video.intercutting back and forth.

Website research

We researched the different artist's websites so that we could gain inspiration for our own website and digipak. by finding out its codes and cnventions. which we did with the help of such
websites such as myinkblog.org and designshack.co.uk we were able to research successful conventions of band websites. The particular articles I look at, ‘Elements of a Great Band Website’ and ‘5 Reasons Band Websites Suck’ break down specific elements of a websites and explain the good and bad parts. There are many features which aid in creating a successful band website.

Elements of a Band Homepage –

– Photo of artist. The most important and probably most obvious feature to include is a picture of the band with member information. The majority of fans are not just interested in the music, but are interested in the individuals who make up the group. Including this feature is a priority not only for the fans but because it can feed the design of the website.

– Appropriate style. The band website needs to match the personality and attitude of the band; if the artist is a country singer a webpage plastered with black elements is not appropriate. The time invested in the design of the website is worthless if the design doesn’t embody the essence and feel of the band. The website needs to be simple so not to take attention away from the band and it needs to be user friendly so the consumer can navigate their way easily through all the information on the site without breaking from the tone of the band. Fallout Boy’s website (http://www.falloutboyrock.com) is successful in showcasing the talent and allowing the band to connect with their fans; the Q&A section provides a platform where the band and the fans may interact which is a great personalisation technique.

– Showcase music. The purpose of the band website is to showcase their music and offer fans the chance to explore the bands work. However not everybody visiting the website may have heard the bands music before so having a well designed playlist can draw new listeners and help to gain new fans. The playlist should not start automatically, this can be annoying if the visitor is not expecting music to begin playing, listening to the playlist should be optional for the visitor and could possibly be placed on a different page.

– Tour Information and Current News. If the band is not currently touring and are in the studio recording tracks instead, it is still vital to provide fans with as much up to date information as possible. Fans will want to know more about the band and their lifestyle, not just the music. Occasionally band members don’t intend to maintain the website or don’t know how to update it. In this scenario it is a good idea for the band to include a live feed from their preferred social networking site (e.g. Facebook or Twitter). This enables the band to connect with fans without having to actually edit the website. Keeping fans up to date with events is important, many websites include a calendar displaying important dates ranging from tour dates to less significant events such as ‘day in the studio’ or ‘interview with Radio 1’.

– Un-cluttered Homepage. It’s important for the website to be user friendly and simple to read so that all fans can have easy access to the bands information. MySpace was once the main promotional tool for a band on the internet and the pages were usually full of ‘widgets’ and different adverts and links all over the page, usually in different fonts and colours which makes it aesthetically look very messy. Some websites nowadays still suffer from ‘MySpace Syndrome’, these are websites which contain many of the same features as MySpace, so the pages are difficult to read. Music players, tour pages, adverts for new albums and a discography page should all still follow the same theme.

– Homepage style. The homepage should follow the tone of the band; rock bands will ideally be black or dark coloured rather than white and minimalistic. People such as Jason Mraz and Jack Johnson who are environmentally friendly will not have a black homepage with flame effects on hyperlinks.

– Not Dependant on Flash. From the articles I have judged that there are two main types of band websites. There is a minimalistic, informative and blog-like website which includes simple templates and colour schemes. On the other hand there are ones which depend on gimmicks, flash animations and sounds to make it aesthetically pleasing, such as the Bestival Weekend Festival website. It is complicated and the links are hidden underneath layers of animation and it is difficult to navigate. Although it appears fun and interesting it is highly impractical in finding out information about the festival.

– Merchandise. Fans of the band will be happy to promote their work and will want to feel included in the family of fans. Having a merchandise page allows fans to purchase music, t shirts and accessories related to the band. The page should be easily to use with a clear process to buy an item without being bombarded with adverts.

Generally band websites are of a poor standard and are influenced by the outdated techniques of MySpace. This is not aesthetically pleasing and a more fluent, simple homepage is much more effective. Band websites must provide a large amount of information on their work, lifestyles, and current news but this must be organised so that it is easy to navigate and the viewer does not become overwhelmed.

DigiPack Analysis/research(3 examples)

1.

This is a digipak created for the well known band The 1975. They are a boy band who formed in 2002 and are best known for their indie music. This is the front cover for their digipak, which is simple and clear by portraying their logo on the front. The conventions of this front digipak is that it is in black and white, which is a representation of indie genre, and shows that they tie specifically into their ways.
The object of their logo is lighten up in bright UV style neon lights, in an empty room of darkness.

This is the back of the digipak which is similar to the front in terms of how it is structured and laid out. The bright neon style object is still there in the dark empty room. However this time, there is a song list on the back of it in a clear white font, which is easy for the audience to read. A convention that I find rather interesting about this is that the lit up object actually reflects off of the floor, which gives the whole digipak a feel of 3D.

This is the inside of the digipak, which is clear and concise. The print is rather small, which is suitable as it is just the small print about the producers and copyright ect.
There are production labels and record labels portrayed within this, which may be something we can include as we create our digipak.

This is how the CD itself looks, which is so simple and easy to create. This clearly states who the CD is by, incase it gets misplaced from the rest of the digipak, and it links into the other pieces of it too.

Bastille - "Bad Blood"

The writing is a good contrast to the background image as its white on black which always shows up well. The image is very dark, and a simple but effective idea. It doesn't particularly link with the album title of Bad Blood as it's someone running down a road at night with what looks like car lights on them, but it still looks good and the colour of the writing matches the lines on the road nicely. It has all the acknowledgements on the front in very small writing, but we'd rather it was on the back as it does make the cover look slightly more cluttered then we would prefer.
The picture on the back cover is similar to that on the front, its the same road but now its a cars headlights, probably the source of the light on the front cover picture (which is a nice way to link them up).
The font for the list of album songs is the same as on the front, and also in white. For ours we are going to make sure that the writing matches in this way, as we think that visually it will just look better. It also includes Bastille's web address and the record company on the back, something which is important and provides people who buy the album with access to more information.
We like the simplicity of Bastille's album cover, but personally think the image is too dark and abstract for our vision of a digipak. The font is unique and easy to read, something we will try to carry over to our own design.

3.

Chase and status - No More Idols.

I choose to analyse Chase and Status's album No More Idols as it in a way challenges it genre with it being electronic dance.

Front cover

By using bold colours it puts emphasis on the genre of music the album holds, electronic. The bright yellow connotes excitement linking to the upbeat excited vibe which as the audience we would expect from this particular genre of music. You could also suggest that the bright colours are used to highlight the huge base within this bands work as it creates a buzz for the audience with yellow being a bright, vibrant colour it reflects that.

The background creates a huge contrast with the text on the album cover due to the black and white. Chase and Status's are known for their crazy gigs where violence can occur, this perhaps is why they used a bulldog as the album background to reflect on this matter. I think the album is very unique and stands out which again, puts emphasis on the uniqueness of this band and their music.

Back cover

The black and yellow theme follows throughout to the back cover. As previously mentioned the colour scheme creates a sense of danger. This again fits to the electronic genre as the excited vibe can become violent when dancing. The back cover also intrigues its audience as it features huge names in music such as Plan B and Liam Bailey.

Inside the album

The inside of this particular digipak is seen as different in comparrison to others as No More Idols blantenly focuses on the power of advertisement. By using live photos of the bands performances at gigs it gives the audience an insight as to what seeing them live would be like. By being unique (such as their music) it creates a really effective and powerful promotion techinique  for them.

CD

And finally, the CD within this album is just another hightlight as to what i have already mention previously. The simple design suggests to the audience that this band want you to focus more on their music more than anything rather than them promotiing their identity which has taken over the music industry drastically over the recent years.
