Hybrid based music video example
An example of a hybrid video (combining both narrative and performance) is the song"SIGN ON" BY RAT BOY.
The videos are shot in the style of videos from the 80's with garrish eye catching visuals and lots of hand held footage cutting back and forth between the members of the band as they are trying to have a good around the town having and neon-twinged visuals of the band preforming with their instruments.
This video was inspired the rock videos of legendary singer-songwriter Morrissey.




PERFORMANCE BASED
 A famous performance based Music video is "Will You Be There" By The Sherlocks. It focuses on the performance of the band solely taking place in a warehouse.With the video taking place with black and white noir-ish background and camera effect.Whilst inter-cut with closeups of the band members instruments. The whole set makes the very simple band performance eye catching and they are all dressed in similar eye-catching outfits consisting of Leather Jackets,denim Jeans(jacket in the case of the bass player on the left) and Plain Color or Striped Shirts .



Narrative Based


A Famous example of a Narrative-Based Music video Is The Song "Take On Me"by A-ha

The linear story-line narrative is an example of amplification; the director has clearly had some freedom with the way in which he interprets the lyrics. There is a very clear representation of lyrics; but rather than having a very literal representation the director has chosen to use a more indirect means of addressing the audience; making it seem almost like a story. The narrative centers around the romance between the comic book man and the reader. There is a certain hint of the "against all odds" "love conquers all" stereotype present within the video- a popular theme within the new wave genre.



CONCEPT BASED

A Famous Example of a concept-based video is the song "Electric feel by MGMT .This video seems to make no sense, although they have used abstract metaphorical images with mild links to the song, when they split the moon open with the 'look' of an electric liquid which links to the song title 'electric feel'. Not only does a concept base video allow the artist to go anywhere with the artistic flow but it can create an image for their band. This video gives the band a 'feel-good' and chilled out mood to people watching therefore it can make people feel these emotions everytime they watch this video. I believe concept videos have both advantages and disadvantages depending on what image the artist wants to create not just for the video but for their overall look.

I have changed the selection of my song since after listening to the song, a story just formed in my head instantly. So the new song I chose is 'Up all night' by 'Alex Clare'.

Original music video concept(now rejected) and New song choices

My original concept was an oceans 11 stlye hiest of a bank done by teens of the bank next to their school (this would have fit the nature of the song new blood-zayde wolf).
This idea has now been rejected as I'm changing the song and going for a more low concept video

Goodwin was born in Sydney, Australia, and began learning the violin at the age of five.[citation needed His father, a school teacher, was a fan of classical music and collector of opera gramophone records]. While singing in St. Andrew’s Cathedral choir, he continued learning the violin, piano, and organ.

Thought Beats

This form of analysis consists of three major steps

 

• ·          Looking  at the structure of a song inorder to gain knowledge of the music itself, by understanding its   chorus and the verse
• ·         Listening to the voice of the artist and how he is uniquely indentified compared to other singers.This can help develop star image 
• ·         Goodwin has identified that  Songs can sometimes tell a story, with the artist being the storyteller. This gives the music video a communication device, as they tell us as the audience a story and we listen to the artist.

Narrative and Performance

• ·         Goodwin suggested that most songs do not give us the complete narrative
• ·         We only tend to attain a brief understanding of the song and then tend to make up our own idea of what is being told 
• ·         The aritst or band who orginally sang and who own the song should also be the ones acting in it as helps increase authenticity by making the music video seem more realistic to the audiences and in establishing a relation with then 
• ·         He suggest that music vidos ignore common narratives and lay more focus on making it more commercial to attract larger audiences 
• ·         He also suggested that the narrative and the music video work together in the making of a music video which would keep audiences watching over and over again 

Star Image 

Goodwin suggest that the star image of an artist plays  a very vital role in a 

music video. They help in making the music video look more appealing to the audiences and bringing a indivisuality to the video by the way the artist is portrayed. The start image an artist defines himself, the costume, moves and appearance. This help to promote the artist/star’s image in public and also helps to promote the video and build the following :

Technical Aspects

Andrew says that the technical aspect helps to hold the music video together Aspects such as :

Relationship of visuals to the song 

There are three ways visuals are used to promote a song :

Illustratation  

Some music videos use some shots or clips to explain the meaning of lyrics to their song and the genre.

Disjuncture.

Is a  situation in which the meaning of the song is completely ignored in the music video.

Amplify

This is when the images and camera shots are  repeatedly shown through out the music video and are inforced into our vision.

Performance Based

Performance based music videos include artists or bands singing and peroforming 

These can be of:

• ·         Dance performance 
• ·         Instrumental performance
• ·         Song performance

Carlsson believed that the performer is often made into a ‘commerical exhibitionist’ this is where the performer is made into almost a selling item; someone that fans often aspire to be and these scenes will be extremely high in quality and have a gloss to them.

Another type is the televised bard, which is a singing storyteller who uses on screen images instead of inner, personal images.

The third and final type is the elctronic shaman, sometimes the shaman is invisible and only his/her voice that anchor the visuals.

Conceptual Based

The audience watch something beyond the artist that aims to have artistic ambitions and they focus on the concept behind the imagery more than just the performance.

•  The music video have the outlok of TV commercials , with several of close-ups and lighting being used to focus on the star’s face.
• He sees visual reference in music video as coming from a range of sources, although the three most frequent are perhaps cinema, fashion and art photography.
• Stewart’s description of the music video as ‘incorportating, raiding and reconstructing’ is essentially the essence of Intertextuality, using something with which the audience may be familiar, to generate both nostalgic associations and new meanings.
• The video allows more access to the performer than a stage performance can. The mise-en-scene, in particular, can be used to emphasise an aspirational lifestyle.

There are basically three types of Music videos

1.Concept based

2.Performance based

3.Narrative based

Thematic - based around a theme, which normally depends on the genre e.g if the genre is rap it was probably feature lots of images of streets. 

Symbolic - there is often lots of symbols to build up a meaning, lots of montage of clips and images, lighten is often used to suggest a mood, pace to represent emotions and meanings, pictures often support and contradict lyrical meanings.

CONCEPT BASED VIDEOS

What populates most music video channels are concept-based music videos. Budgets for these kinds of videos ranges from $20,000 to over $600,000. The more complex the concept, the higher the required budget. The most expensive MV of all time is Michael Jackson’s Scream which was reported to have cost $7M dollars in 1995. Concept music videos can be story based in nature or might focus on graphics and special effects.

Shooting can be done in a few hours and production crews can be hired for $1000 or less depending on the concept. This, however, doesn’t include the other production costs like wardrobes, makeup, and venue fees, which should always be taken into account. Although budgets still won’t be at the low end, indie artists and bands prefer performance videos because funding it is easier than concept-based videos.

The  Actor usually has a dilemma or problem which they face throughout the video or they would have a story arc throughout the video and the lyrics sung by the singer or band would usually represent their feelings or their situation.
